I came to therapy first in the midst of an enormous amount of change in my life, in my vocation, identity, and relationships. My first experience of therapy was behavioral. The tools my therapist taught me were helpful, but years later I found myself mired in the same questions, struggling with the same issues because we had not actually addressed the root of the problems I was facing. We had attended only to the ways those issues were impacting my behavior.
My second journey through therapy was Jungian, and it was a very different experience. In some ways much slower, more patient. My therapist was happy to offer tools to help me cope in the moment, but he was not content to stop there. Instead he encouraged my curiosity about my own life, about how I became who I am and who I want to become. I found myself awed by the wisdom that came through my dreams, the way my life made so much sense when viewed through the lens of folk tales and cultural myths, and how teasing out symbol and meaning helped me make sense of my past, understand the why of my self-beliefs and behaviors, and foster lasting change and empowerment.
Therapy is not just about getting you back to being a productive worker, a juggle-everything super-Mom, the one "no one has to worry about." Therapy is about putting down the mask, opening the gates of our soul and getting curious with a trusted guide. Therapy is about allowing yourself to be seen, by your therapist and by your self, maybe for the first time ever.
Our culture values action, certainty, power, and dominance in all things: including healing. But such lopsided concepts of healing leave us feeling as if we have failed, when truly we've only had half the tools we need, we have exiled whole parts of our being. At Holdfast I lean into mystery, rest, stillness, liminal space, vulnerability as strength, and the wondrous power of your nervous system to heal itself.
Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.

EMDR
EMDR relies on your body and mind's built in healing system. We all have one, it is what allows us to move through the everyday ups and downs of life. It is why sometimes we find ourselves surprised how well we handled a situation that we thought might leave us in distress. But sometimes it gets short circuited. Trauma is the leftover mental, physical, and emotional result of that interrupted self-healing. EMDR helps us gently move our wondrous healing system back into sync and to let is metabolize our deepest hurts until they to are memories from which we can learn and grow, instead of hold us captive.

Jungian Psychotherapy
I work from a Jungian theoretical mindset which means that I am deeply curious about the unconscious wisdom moving in your life and calling you to growth and deep change. You are not just a list of ways you have been hurt and behaviors you have learned as a result. You are a deeply mysterious, powerful, and wonder-inspiring being. I am honored to sit with amazing humans as they explore the depths of their past, the breadth of their emotional, mental, and spiritual resources and connect to that which is at the root of all human longing: connection, meaning, wonder, and joy.
As a therapist and Episcopal Priest I have come to understand that therapy is, for many of us, the modern day equivalent of the shaman's circle of our ancient ancestors' past. As our religious institutions have abandoned and betrayed us we have lost a lifeline of connection to something greater than ourselves and of ways to make meaning of our life beyond the cult of consumerism and capitalism that has reduced us to mere workers and consumers. But therapy, practiced with depth and awe, can help us bridge that gap and reclaim our connection to inner wisdom and meaning.
In sessions we will move between Jungian practices such as dream work, active imagination, and exploration of the past and EMDR sessions to assist your nervous system in moving traumatic memories from where they are currently stuck in active memory to healthy processing and storage in long term "past and over" memory. EMDR's emphasis on metaphor, dream imagery, and emotional energy pairs beautifully with the work of Jungian therapy and the two help to build a cohesive system for permanent healing and change.

Breathwork
I am trained in an active three part breathing practice (I call Cauldron Breathing) which is a helpful add-on to therapy or spirital direction. It generates energy, creates empowerment as you learn to both activate and calm your nervous system, and can create therapy and integration from weeks worth of therapy work. Breahtwork is an embodied somatic practice which brings our whole self together in a way few Western practices can match.
